Araish: Rajasthan's Mirror-Finish Plaster

Araish: The Mirror Finish of Rajasthan

There’s a profound reason why the royal palaces of Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur still gleam like polished ivory centuries after they were built. Look closely at those walls—that isn't paint. Real luxury doesn't peel, it doesn't blister, and it certainly doesn't come out of a plastic bucket. That breathtaking, glass-like surface is Araish.

A Labor of Absolute Obsession

Araish is the absolute pinnacle of Indian plastering. It is entirely zero-chemical, but demanding perfectly execution. The recipe reads more like an Ayurvedic cure than a building material.

Our artisans start with lime putty that has been aged underwater for months to ensure it is unbelievably smooth. We blend this with incredibly fine, pure white marble dust. To give it elasticity and a luminous sheen, we fold in natural plant gums like Guggal (myrrh) or boiled jaggery water.

But the ingredients are only half the story. The soul of Araish is in the burnishing. The final layer is applied millimeter by millimeter. Then, using smooth, polished agate stones, our craftsmen press, rub, and burnish the surface entirely by hand. This brutal, exhaustive compression aligns the microscopic marble particles perfectly, forcing the lime to cure into a dense, waterproof mirror.

Run your hand across an Araish wall, and it feels like cool velvet. Look right into it, and you’ll see your reflection. It bounces natural light deep into a room, making spaces feel majestic without a single synthetic chemical.
